Breeding animals for sport racing is common in every speed racing industry, for example horse racing and greyhound racing. It isn't solely limited to sled dog breeders and racers.

Ever since working in dog sled racing I advocate against all forms of animal racing. The animal welfare act in the US banned all forms of animal fighting at one time. They didnt ban dog fighting one year, then rooster fighting another, etc etc. They banned all of them at once. We need to do something similar with "animal racing." Ban all forms at one time.

@@doggodoggo3000 Siberian Huskies can reach running speeds up to 30 miles per hour. They can run up to 150 miles in a day, averaging a speed of 9-10mph.

Thats excessive and cruel, and for that to be remotely possible would have certain trail and weather conditions as well as loads of physical conditioning and training. And maybe find me an example of that actually happening with siberians. I worked in sprint racing, much shorter distances. 20-30 miles tops. The dogs run faster, no one is running anywhere near 30mph. They might can run 30mph while not hooked to a sled but thats not really relevant to this conversation or all that unique to them.
I noticed on live broadcasts no one can comment. Can any send me a link on how to prepare my pup for husky sports? She is 11 months. I have been teaching her mushing commands. She has them down pretty good except for the big one which is MOVE ON. She is anywhere from 40-50%

@@annag5576 Sledding isn't abuse or animal cruelty 🤷♀️. The 400+ dead dog stats put out by PETA are literally false. They include every dog that died even outside of the race (i.e not participating) even if that was from natural causes
I personally dont support the iditarod because of the brutal animal abuse… but if this race was gone, the wilderness might be disturbed and construction might intrude the forests, expanding the state. I think the race is something that protects the preservation of nature in Alaska.
I think you need to know the mushers and how they treat their dogs. I have no knowledge of this sport but i definetely think it ranges from people who run their dogs to death for a win to people who really do this for the love of the dogs. Huskies are really bred to do this and they become agitated and annoyed if they can't excercise. you'll see a lot of dogs in this video with their tails up and wagging ready to do the job
@@Aeradill on this matter I agree, you can’t put all mushers into one group. Most mushers keep their dogs on a small leash for most of their life, even after the dogs retire, I guess thats my main problem with it, along with the radical mushers that run their dogs without stopping until their mouths bleed and muscles contract
@@skateraptor12 I suggest you educate yourself on the rules of the Iditarod, as far as the length of time a musher may run his/her dogs. Additionally, at mandatory stopping areas, there are veterinarians who thoroughly examine and check the health of each dog before the musher is allowed to proceed after the team has rested.
@margaritacisne: obviously, you have no idea of the physical toll the race takes on the mushers. They don't spend their time in the race standing on the sled runners, solely along for the ride. Additionally, the sled dogs love to run. They're not forced to do so, and often will continue to run even after the musher has shouted out several times for the team to halt. In such instances, the musher must deploy the sled's brake and force the team to halt.

@supernoodles: do you own, raise, and race sled dogs? If not, how do you know what form of "medicine" may work best for them? In some areas where sled dogs are raised, standard veterinary care is not quickly or readily available. Thus, the mushers have to utilize alternate methods of care to treat their dogs and keep them healthy. Such choices are theirs to make.
This sport is absolutely ridiculous. More dogs die in this race from being so sick and tired that they collapse and choke on their own vomit. 😢. Just so cruel!

Good points. A race where dogs don't get straw or coats would definitely select for a more authentic working dog rather than a sporting dog.
